All about me!

I'm originally from Bloomington, Illinois but ended up in Charlotte, NC by way of 29 Palms, California and Chesapeake, Virginia.  My husband of 13 years was in the USMC and when he left the service, we settled here with our 2 kids.  Unfortunately, due to some serious and flagrant adultery, the marriage ended, and I stayed in Charlotte to make things easier on the children. 

I currently work as a registrar (read administrative jane of all trades) at a pediatric practice here, and in my spare time (spare time? what is that?), I work a second job at my church and I practice being Mary Poppins to other families.

It's more than just a robot-Part 2

A couple of years ago I wrote a blog post about my son's competition robotics team.  About how he came home one day and told me he wanted to join, and I had no idea what I was in for. Now, two years later, the phrase "It's more than just a robot" hits home more than I ever thought it would.  This year is the last year my son will be a part of Team 4935.  I watched him grow from a wide eyed 13 year old who had no idea what he was doing, to a confident 17 year old who amazes me every time I look at him.  I look at his teammates, seeing how they have grown so much. Our First Season with Team T-Rex Our Final Bag Day I never knew how big of a piece of my heart these kids would take.  I signed on to be "team mom" and be that person who could give a ride home when needed and bring snacks.  I ended up being so much more.  These kids enrich my life.  They make me humble.  They make me proud. They break my heart.  I love them each in their own unique way

The end result is worth the struggle, or how it feels to be on the verge of an empty nest.

 In 2006, my ex husband sent me an email saying, "I want a divorce. You need to find a job". Needless to say it shattered my world. I had been a stay at home mom for 5 years and had no idea this was coming. He found someone else, someone that he would eventually go on to marry, but at the time I was left with a kindergartner and a third grader, no college degree, no work experience for the past 5 years, and a looming deadline of figuring out what I had to do to survive.   However, the one thing I always had was a village. I watched and cared for other people's children, and their families, helped out in church, volunteered, was a team parent... all of those people helped me find my feet again. One of my best friends in the world helped me get a job, other friends helped us move when I found a little townhouse to buy despite making $11 an hour, helped feed us, and helped support us. Family FIRST, and life changing events...

I have written about my family more than anything else, because they are what makes me who I am.  They are the reason I get up in the morning. The reason I breathe every day.  The first thing on my mind when I wake up, and the last thing on my mind when I fall asleep. I am extremely lucky to have loving parents, incredible siblings, a (now) great husband and two of the most amazing kids on the planet. Being a mother is one of the most defining parts of who I am.  It's the biggest part of my heart.  Even though my kids are technically adults, being their mom will never stop. I'll never stop worrying about them, even though they can take care of themselves.  Over the last 6 years, being a part of a FIRST Robotics team made me a "mom" in other ways.  40-50 high school students every year have been a big part of my life, and I have been lucky to inspire them and to let them know that they always have a "safe space" with me.
